Barcelona team news ahead of Real Madrid

Barcelona are already 16 points ahead of their great rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Primera Liga. Even with 12 games left after tomorrow’s Clasico, there is very little chance of Barcelona losing the Spanish title this season. Jordi Roura and his players will be desperate for a good result at the Bernabeu, though, to banish the painful memories of the recent defeats by Madrid and AC Milan.
Lionel Messi is likely to start, despite suffering from illness this week. The Argentinean star is keen to remind the jubilant fans of Madrid that Tuesday’s result was an aberration they should not get accustomed to. The Spanish cup game and the Champions league game in Milan were the two worst performances of the season by a long way by Barca, but they are determined to bounce back.
Two players who will not be in the team are Fabregas and Xavi, who are both in need of a rest. Although the Clasico tomorrow is important for confidence and morale, the really important game is against AC Milan on March 12th, and so it is vital that Xavi and Fabregas are ready for that.
David Villa has been showing good form and has been desperate for more time on the pitch, so he should get his wish tomorrow. The news from Madrid is that Ronaldo will start on the bench in order to stay fresh for the second leg against Manchester United.

Barcelona lose place as best in the world

Barcelona have been called the best in the world, and some have said that the current team are the best in history. For nearly two years now Barca have also been at the top of the world rankings for football clubs, even when they lost the Primera Liga title of Spain to Real Madrid last season. That run has now come to an end.
Three defeats in the last four games, two to Madrid and one to AC Milan, has seen the team slip to fifth in the rankings compiled by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics. Chelsea’s cup double of last season has helped them jump to the top of the list, with Bayern Munich, Athletico Madrid and Corinthians also ahead of Barcelona.
The club will not be too concerned about these rankings, but it does highlight the mini crisis that the team is having at the minute. It is not just the losses, but the manner of them that has been so frustrating. Barcelona have always tended to concede goals, but the lack of penetration and clear chances in the last few games has been incredible.
Maybe Roura should rest the likes of Messi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Pedro and Xavi this weekend in the league. The players look tired and devoid of leadership, and they need to sort it out quickly. There is still very little danger of failing to win La Liga, but if we go out of the Champions League to AC Milan just after going out of the Copa Del Rey to Madrid, the season will suddenly seem like a disappointment.

Barcelona to hold crisis meeting ahead of Champions League

Nobody seems to be able to put their finger on the reasons for the recent slump in form suffered by FC Barcelona, but everyone concerned with the club knows that it needs to be put right quickly. Three poor games have seen Barca crash out of the Spanish cup and leave themselves with a 2-0 deficit to overcome in the Champions League.
The players and coach have arranged an informal meeting in a restaurant outside Barcelona to discuss things in the hope to rekindle the scintillating form that has deserted them at the worst possible time. They will forgo the double training session for this meeting, which I think is a good idea and hopefully it will work.
Football writers are claiming that, all of a sudden, teams have worked out how to play against the Barcelona system, but that is ridiculous. Teams have tried the exact same tactics before and got nowhere, or simply got lucky, like Chelsea. Barca have not been at their normal level, whether it is through tiredness, complacency or something else.
We know that Barca are perfectly capable of beating AC Milan by more than two goals, as long as they are playing well. I don’t think the tactics need changing, but somehow the approach is wrong. There is a theory that the players are lacking the direction previously given to them by Tito Vilanova or Pep Guardiola, and that seems the most likely explanation. If so, there is nothing that can be done until the coach returns from his cancer treatment in America, and Barca may have to wait until next year to win the fifth European cup.

Neymar expected to join Barcelona this summer!!

There is no official confirmation of when, or even if, the young Brazilian superstar Neymat will become a Barcelona player. According to the Brazilian media, however, it is merely a matter of when, and the consensus seems to be that the transfer will be completed in the summer.
According to Mundodeportivo, the club have been negotiating the terms of Neymar’s arrival for the last 18 months. The 21-year old was believed to be keen to stay at his club Santos until the summer of 2014, when the World cup will be played in Rio, but the belief now is that the striker feels that the time has come to move to the big time in Europe. Neymar already has 17 goals from his 28 senior international games, and has gained enough experience at club level in Brazil.
There are plenty of clubs interested in Neymar, such as Chelsea and Manchester City in England, PSG, Real Madrid and other big hitters, but there seems to be an agreement in place with Barca, which seems to have signaled the departures of David Villa and Alexis Sanchez from the Nou Camp.
It seems like the critics who say that Barcelona is all about Messi and that if you stop him you stop the whole team, will have to think of something else.

Messi sets another record as Barcelona beat Deportivo

After Barcelona held a meeting in the week to talk about the recent struggles, there were a number of changes made to the starting line up for yesterday’s Primera Liga match against bottom club Deportivo. Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Alba and Pique were all rested.
There was still plenty of quality in the team and Barca completely dominated possession but could not get the breakthrough goal until near the end of the first half. The good news is that they were creating plenty of chances, and it was Alexis Sanchez that finally finished one off with a good header from a pinpoint Dani Alves cross.
After a less dominant performance in the second half, Deportivo were sensing an upset, so Messi and Iniesta were introduced, followed by Busquets. Barca looked much more incisive after that, and Messi combined with Iniesta and Alves to score for the 17th league game in a row and seal the win.
No other player has achieved this feat in any top divisio0n around the world, just one more amazing statistic in the fantastic football career of the world’s best player. Barcelona fans will hope that he is fired up for the crucial visit of AC Milan on Tuesday.

Why New Blood is Needed at Barcelona

A golden generation of La Masia graduates were at the core of Pep Guardiola’s side which won 14 trophies in three seasons, but signs are beginning to show that the tiki-taka dominance could be coming to an end.
Two successive defeats in the el Clasico in the space of a week inflicted considerable hurt on the Blaugrana, whilst hopes of Champions League progression remain in the balance following defeat against AC Milan at the San Siro.
Barca have all but wrapped up the La Liga title after stretching out into a comfortable lead at the top of the table, but the invincibility of the Catalonia side appears to be waning.
Managerial difficulties have not helped Barcelona’s cause with current boss Tito Vilanova suffering from a recurrence of his parotid gland cancer back in December. Vilanova’s period away from the club has seem to led to some inconsistency in Barca’s play and the early season dominance Barcelona enjoyed in La Liga is fast being forgotten.
Vilanova’s current crop of stars still consists of many of the graduate class that were essential during Guardiola’s hay-day, but goalkeeper Victor Valdes has uttered his intention to leave the La Liga leaders and David Villa has struggled to return to his previous best since breaking his leg last year.
Stalwarts Carlos Puyol, Xavi and Andres Iniesta are all beginning to show signs of the exertions of over a decade of tiki-taka football, so the need for new blood at the Nou Camp continues to gather pace.
La Masia itself continues to be a healthy production line for Barcelona and the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Christian Tello and Isaac Cuenca all seem capable of making the step-up into the first team.
World superstar Neymar has been long since coveted by the Spanish giants, but Malaga’s Isco should be one player, which Sandro Rosell should acquire given the progress made by the Golden Boy this season.
Former Malaga midfielder Santi Cazorla carries all the ingredients to carry out Barcelona’s superb passing game, whilst Athletic Bibao’s Iker Munian is another that could be on the radar given reports that Alexis Sanchez may be on his way out of the Nou Camp. Many football betting tips still favour Barcelona to progress in the Champions League and although the air of invincibility is beginning to be eroded, talk of the death of tiki-taka seem premature.

Big changes are likely to be made to the playing staff this summer and all eyes will be on Barcelona, to see if their period of dominance and invincibility can be restored on the European stage.

It’s all about attitude for Barcelona vs. Milan

The players and coaching staff of Barcelona know that this one game against AC Milan could define the whole season for the club. If Barca fail to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the San Siro, most of them will look back on the season with regret, whereas a good performance that sees them through will galvanize the team for the rest of the season and install Barcelona back as favourites to lift the European cup again.
Barca were absolutely flying earlier this season, leading to claims that this team was even better than the one assembled by Pepe Guardiola a few years ago. Whether it is tiredness, complacency or the absence of Tito Vilanova from the dressing room is unsure, but Barca have definitely lost their way a little.
It is certain that the Spanish Primera Liga title will be heading back to the Nou Camp, but the Champions League would add the gloss that the team deserves. Plenty of Barca players have been talking up the chances of still progressing, while Milan know that they could be in for a torrid time. If Barca can produce what they are really capable of, we know that 2, 3 or 4 goals is well within reach.
I think it will come down to which team has the right attitude. Milan could crack under intense pressure, or they could be encouraged into the game if Barca are not causing them too many problems. Hopefully the recent poor results will have given the team a wake up call and they will set about Milan in the right way tonight. If that happens, we will be in the quarter-finals.

Xavi is fit, Villa and Puyol could start for Barcelona v AC Milan

The brain of Barcelona is back, and hopefully reinvigorated after his break. Barca will need Xavi Hernandez to be back to his best at the Nou Camp tonight if they are to get to the next round of the Champions League. The midfield maestro has been passed fit by medical experts after recovering from his hamstring problem. Many believe that Barca’s recent problems can be traced back to Xavi’s absence and the fact that he was not at 100 percent before.
His inclusion in tonight’s starting line up will give his team mates extras belief that they can show that the first leg at the San Siro was a blip. Reports from the Spanish media also suggest that Mr. Barcelona himself Carles Puyol could start, not so much for his defensive abilities but for his attitude and leadership.
It seems as if David Villa has also forced his way into the starting 11, following some good performances. His experience and scoring record at the top level could be crucial, as Barca cannot afford to squander chances against what will no doubt be a very defensive Italian side.
The probable line up:
Valdes
Alves, Pique, Puyol/Mascherano, Alba
Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta,
Pedro, Messi, Villa
That leaves Fabregas, Tello and Alexis as impact substitutes in the attacking sense. Any of them could cause Milan real problems as they get tired later in the game. It should be a real cracker.

Champions League: Barcelona turn AC Milan tie on its head to make last eight

Barcelona put in a dominant display during a 4-0 victory over AC Milan to make their way into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, with a comprehensive win at Camp Nou seeing them through 4-2 on aggregate.
Lionel Messi took his remarkable tally for the season onto 53 with a deadly double, while David Villa and Jordi Alba were also among the goals as Barca offered a timely reminder to those who have had the audacity to write them off on the back of a recent dip in their impeccably high standards.
Milan set up from the off looking to cling on to their two-goal first leg lead, but the Italian outfit's containing job saw them hold out for just five minutes before a moment of magic from Messi brought the tie screaming back to life.
The mercurial Argentine gathered the ball on the edge of the area, after a period of intricate one-touch football from the hosts, and sent a stinging drive arrowing into the top corner, with Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati left rooted to the spot.
Barca continued to prod and probe as the visitors sat off, with Abbiati pushed to full stretch as he first tipped an Andres Iniesta volley onto the crossbar and then touched a curling effort from Xavi around the post.
Stephan El Shaarawy was offering the only glimmer of hope for Milan, but the talented forward scuffed two tame shots at Victor Valdes.
Milan were able to create one golden opportunity, though, on 38 minutes, but teenage striker M'Baye Niang fluffed his lines as he raced clear on the counter and slid a low shot onto the foot of the post.
Within 60 seconds the magnitude of that miss was made painfully clear to the visitors, with Massimo Ambrosini losing the ball to Iniesta in midfield and six perfect touches later the ball was in the back of the net - with Messi cutting onto his left foot and drilling past Abbiati from the edge of the box.
Milan were getting sick of the sight of Messi by the time the second half got under way, and he moved ominously through the gears within seconds of the re-start before firing straight at Abbiati.
Barcelona can hurt you in any number of ways, though, and it was Villa who grabbed their third of the evening on 55 minutes, with Kevin Constant's failed attempt to cut out a pass allowing the Spain international to curl home and celebrate in style.
Barca could not afford to relax in the knowledge that one away goal for Milan would swing the encounter back in the Rossoneri's favour, and they suffered a couple of nervy moments at the back as the Serie A side finally came out of their shell and made one final desperate effort to keep their European dream alive.
However, having worked so hard to get their noses in front, Barcelona were not to be denied and Alba made their progress into Friday's last-eight draw a little more comfortable with a composed finish in stoppage time.

Pinto had almost nothing to do: Deportivo didn't produce a single shot on goal Alves, Thiago and Song were the most active players for Barça

osé Manuel Pinto featured in the opening line-up against Deportivo at the age of 37 years 121 days and so beat the league record previously held by Alexanko (37 years 32 days).  If the Valdés ban is upheld, he will extend his lead as the oldest player to appear for Barça in the league.

The defeat of Deportivo also saw Barça keep a clean sheet after a run of 13 consecutive games conceding at least one goal.  Let’s take a look at some of the stats from Saturday’s game:

• FC Barcelona broke a negative run of thirteen matches conceding at least one goal (since the 5-0 win against Cordoba in the Cup).  In the league, the team had not kept a clean sheet for the last eight games, (since the 4-0 defeat of Espanyol).

• Pinto had almost nothing to do.  Deportivo were unable to produce a single effort on goal while Barça had seven.

• Alexis scored his four goal of 2013, his previous goals coming against Cordoba (2) and Getafe.

• The Chilean international hadn’t completed a league game since FCB v Granada in the 5th round though he did play the full 90 minutes against Cordoba in the Cup (5-0).

• With Messi and Piqué starting on the bench, Alves – with six - moves to the top in terms of consecutive starting line-up appearances in recent matches.  Meanwhile, Thiago Alcántara has now started the last five matches in the league.

• Alves, Thiago and Song were the most active players for Barça against Deportivo, participating in 152, 118 and 103 moves, respectively.

• Cristian Tello hadn’t made the starting line-up since the Cup match against Malaga (2-2).  In the league, his last appearance was away to Mallorca (2-4).

• Cesc Fàbregas made his 50th league appearance against Deportivo.  In these 50 games he’s scored fifteen goals and celebrated 39 victories.

• Alex Song has made eleven league appearances for Barça. He’s won them all.

19 players named to FC Barcelona's team, including Xavi Hernández

The FC Barcelona midfielder trained with the group this Monday afternoon at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper

Tito Vilanova and Jordi Roura have named 19 players to the team ahead of the return leg of the Champions League round of 16 match against AC Milan. Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Piqué, Fàbregas, Puyol, Xavi, Villa, Iniesta, Alexis, Messi, Thiago, Mascherano, Sergio, Pedro, Jordi Alba, Adriano, Song and Tello will suit up against the Italian team

Therefore, Xavi Hernández has been named to the team, even though he has yet to receive the medical all-clear to return to competitive play. Montoya, Abidal, Dos Santos and Bartra (injured) did not make the team.

Training session with all available players

Barça completed its penultimate training session before tomorrow’s clash with Milan. Breaking from team routine, the players trained at the Ciutat Esportiva instead of at the Camp Nou. All available players were present, including Xavi, who once again trained with normality.

After the session, the players relocated to Hotel W of Barcelona. They will train once again – on Tuesday at noon at the Camp Nou – before tomorrow’s match against Milan.

16-year anniversary of FC Barcelona's historic 5-4 comeback against Atlético Madrid

FC Barcelona culminated one of the most amazing comebacks in Club history when Atlético Madrid visited the Camp Nou 16 years ago today

16 years ago today, on March 12 of 1997, the Camp Nou was witness to an epic comeback against Atlético Madrid in the return leg of the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. The Madrid-based team had taken a 0-3 lead only to see the Blaugrana battle back to a 5-4 victory. Barça’s manager was Bobby Robson and the great Brazilian forward, Ronaldo, led the herculean and totally unexpected comeback.

Even though Barça were favoured to make it through to the next round because of the 2-2 from the away leg, Altético came out swinging and quickly jumped to a 0-3 lead, all of them scored by Pantic (min. 8, 28 and 31, this last one from a penalty). The teams went to the break with the 0-3 on the scoreboard, which meant that the Blaugrana needed to score four goals if they wanted to make the semi-finals. It was a colossal task, but it wasn’t impossible. On 40 minutes, Pizzi and Stoichkov, two forwards, came in for Popescu and Blanc. Playing in a 3-2-5 formation - the front line made up os Stoichkov, Luis Enrique, Ronaldo, Figo and Pizzi - Barça laid siege to Atlético’s goal with the hope of sparking a miraculous fight back.  During half time, Robson simply told his men: “Look at the jerseys you have on and the shield you carry.” Said and done. The Blaugrana unfurled their artillery and came at Atlético with everything they had. The Camp Nou erupted when Ronaldo scored a brace (min. 47 and 50). Unfortunately, one minute later an error from Barça’s keeper, Vitor Baia, was punished by Pantic, making it 2-4. Despite the blow, neither the team nor the fans gave up hope. Robson’s men threw themselves at Molina’s goal and the players that defended it and on the 67th minute, Figo scored to make it 3-4.

Ronaldo brought Barça level thanks to an assist from Ivan de la Peña. The 4-4 result would see the Balugrana out of the competition, and it didn’t look good as the players were exhausted by the effort they had already put in. It was then that the Argentinian forward, Juan Antonio Pizzi, on the 82 minute, culminated Barça’s comeback. The goal prompted Joaquim Maria Puyal to famously belt out “Pizzi, sos Macanudo!” over the radio. The Camp Nou exploded with delight as the team had completed one of the most epic comebacks in Club history.

The feat wasn’t in vain, FC Barcelona went on to defeat UD Las Palmas in the semi-finals and in the final, the Blaugrana claimed the title thanks to a 3-2 victory over Betis.

Youth A team draws with Ghana (1-1)

The FCB Youth A team played a friendly on Tuesday morning against the Ghana U20 national side, who are currently preparing for the African Cup of Nations

Barça B player Agostinho Cá, and Youth B members Munir and Palencia also represented the side coached by Jordi Vinyals

The Youth A side are showing excellent progress as demonstrated today against the Ghana U20 national team in a game that ended one each.
It was a tight match with chances for both sides, although the Africans probably had most, especially in the second half when Onana was particularly outstanding.
The Black Stars took an early 6th minute lead through Francis Warh, and Barça didn’t manage to find an answer until the 70th minute, when a Joel Huertas shot deflected in off a Ghanaian defender.
Agostinho Cá, Munir and Palencia as reinforcements
Jordi Vinyals picked a team using mainly his regular first team plus a few additional recruits. Barça B’s Agostinho Cá, who needs to get match practice, was played in midfield, while two players from the Youth B team, Munir and Palencia, played half a match each and looked competitive.
Vinyals started the match using Tienda, Palencia, Roger, Costa, Brian, Samper, Ebwelle, Cá, Cristian, Joel and Maxi. In the second half he also fielded: Onana, Lucas, Babunski, Pol Calvet, Quintillà and Munir.
Deserved draw
This was always going to be a tough challenge for the Youth B team, against an international side preparing for a major tournament later this month. The U20 African Cup of Nations doubles as a qualifying tournament for the U20 World Cup in Turkey, where Ghana are expected to be one of the favourites.

Barcelona fullback Alves: Messi IS sad. He doesn't share his life with me

Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves admits teammate Lionel Messi has been down in recent games. Messi last week bristled at claims he was "sad". But Alves says: "On a day to day I see him as normal, I see it. But I'm not hypocritical. It is clear that in recent games he has been emotionally down. "Why? I do not know, I have not sought to know. I just want to know what he's interested in sharing. And if someone is not interested in sharing his life or living, who am I to ask? I respect his space. "But I noticed he was a little more downcast than usual. I think what sets it apart from others is that he has a great personality and when he is down, he tries again." Is Alves just being open? Or will he upset Messi with these comments? Give us your shout below...

Celta Vigo 1-2 Real Madrid: Ronaldo the difference again as double seals win

After a slow start to the game the Portuguese idol netted his 25th and 26th Liga goals of the season to earn his team a hard-fought win over the Galicians

Real Madrid were forced to work hard in order to secure a 2-1 win over a resilient Celta Vigo side in La Liga at Balaidos.

The Celestes began impressively but soon wilted as Jose Mourinho's side asserted their superiority. But with Javi Varas in fine form it was not until the 61st minute that the deadlock was broken through Cristiano Ronaldo.

Iago Aspas equalised for the hosts after some shoddy defending just two minutes later, but Ronaldo wrapped up the win with a cool finish from the penalty spot.

Celta enjoyed a positive start to the game, with Aspas forcing Diego Lopez into action after just 15 seconds, and it took another two saves in quick succession from the keeper to keep things level in the 10th minute.

Aspas was again at the heart of the threat and it took a strong hand from the keeper to turn his cross-goal shot wide. The resultant corner was clipped deep to Alex Lopez but with his volley skidding towards the bottom corner, Lopez got across and held the ball.

The Celestes had been successful in holding a high defensive line but an Enrique de Lucas free kick that bent narrowly wide midway through the half proved to be a turning point.

Madrid soon gained fluency in the final third and pressed Abel Resino's men back. They were lucky that Ronaldo opted to square the ball when through on goal after 22 minutes, though Karim Benzema was also starting to find space to cause problems.

The Frenchman had two chances to beat Varas before the half hour mark but the keeper came out on top on both occasions.

Marcelo and Jose Callejon were both denied by some excellent goalkeeping from Varas before Ronaldo saw a header come crashing back off the bar in the 42nd minute.

Varas' impressive form continued after the restart as his strong hand kept Benzema's curling effort out and Marcelo fared no better as he blazed over the bar in the 57th minute.

Four minutes later, though, his resistance was broken. Luka Modric's corner was only partially cleared and when it came back into the area it fell to Ronaldo, who somehow brought the ball under control and slotted into the net on the spin.

But the lead only lasted three minutes as some slack defending cost Mourinho's men dearly. Augusto Fernandez made use of a quick throw-in to drill a low cross to Aspas, who found the back of the net as his shot took a wicked deflection off Pepe.

Lopez almost gifted Celta another goal as he spilled the ball in the area, but his side were back in front in the 72nd minute. Substitute Kaka was brought down inside the area by Varas, and Ronaldo remained cool under pressure by chipping the penalty straight down the middle of the goal.

Gonzalo Higuain missed a pair of chances to add some gloss to the finish but Mourinho's blushes were truly spared in the last minute of normal time as Park Chu-Young's header hit the bar and went behind.

Los Merengues therefore temporarily move above their cross-city rivals, Atletico Madrid, into second position, but that could change should Diego Simeone's men defeat Real Sociedad later on Sunday.
